KVM Switches: Answering the server management and control challenge
 |
 |
Keyboard Video Mouse (KVM) switches allow the sharing of one local keyboard, mouse, and monitor to access and control as many servers or network devices as the switch will support. Most IT organizations use KVM switches to minimize the number of input devices and monitors necessary to control multiple servers.
KVM switches therefore reduce the amount of equipment needed to control multiple computers. KVM systems can provide significant savings, streamlining operations and simplifying control.
When does your business need to use a KVM switch? Imagine a server room with ten servers. To control these servers without a KVM switch you would need ten monitors, ten keyboards and ten mice. You would also have to supply electricity to all this equipment and, due to the amount of equipment running, you would probably also need to air-condition the room regularly to prevent the hardware from overheating. What's more, to access different computers, a network administrator would need to be constantly moving around the room to get to the console controlling each one. You would also be taking up a tremendous amount of expensive space to house all this equipment.
Use a KVM switch to control multiple servers A KVM switch changes all this. With a KVM switch, you could control all ten computers from a single monitor, keyboard and mouse. That would eliminate almost 50% of your equipment requirements as well as 50% of your power needs. It would also reduce your space requirements by more than half, making control of the server room much easier. Instead of constantly moving from place to place to gain access, you could monitor and control all your computers from a single location.
KVM switches also allow multiple users to simultaneously access different hardware connected to the same system, greatly improving administrative flexibility, efficiency, and productivity.
With a KVM switch, it is possible to choose which device to manage, fix or maintain from a single user station at any given time. This vastly improves device management efficiency and productivity for the operator while reducing clutter and hardware costs and mitigates security concerns in the data center.
With the addition of remote access using TCP/IP protocols, today's KVM solutions commonly include remote access to servers from anywhere in the world over a web browser, combined Serial control, and integrated power management.
